Hypnotherapy

What is hypnosis?

  Hypnotherapy assists people with motivation to achieve alternative, positive ways of thinking and behaving. It works on  the minds inner potential to promote personal development and the body’s innate healing capacity.

The mind can be divided into 3 sections;

· conscious mind -responsible for thoughts and experience of external stimuli.

· unconscious mind –the internal belief system responsible for automatic responses to external stimuli.

· CCF- the ‘filter’ and protector of the unconscious mind– responsible for regulating what goes into the unconscious mind. (In children under the age of 10 the CCF is under-developed, which is why children are so easily influenced.)

During hypnosis the therapist attempts to ‘suspend’ the CCF,  through inducing a trance state. The trance state is a heightened state of the unconscious mind. It is in this trance state that the hypnotherapist talks directly to the unconscious mind. The  positive suggestions that the therapist delivers can be absorbed into the unconscious mind, thus become automatic, natural responses. The required number of sessions varies depending on the problem, but is usually between 2 and 4.

How will the sessions work?

The initial consultation consists of an assessment and discussion of the proposed treatment plan. There is opportunity for the client to ask questions and clarify any points. A relaxation exercise is included in this session to enable the client to experience the trance state.

Subsequent sessions usually last between 60 and 90 minutes.

During sessions the client is guided into a state of deep mental and physical relaxation.

The therapist will then talk to the heightened unconscious mind. The client just has to listen, allow the relaxation process to happen, and follow the simple instructions.

Hypnosis facilitates a state of calm similar to the trance state of daydreaming. Some people experience the feeling of heaviness and lethargy, others may feel light. There may be some time distortion and some people may experience partial amnesia, whilst others may remember everything. There is no loss of awareness and clients remain completely in control.
